Histoire

60 ans d'esprit d'entreprise

Capital Property Development

From that retail success came a pivotal insight: instead of Mobilia leasing space, why not build a centre and have Mobilia as the anchor tenant. That idea gave birth to Capital Property Development in 1987 — launching a family enterprise that would grow from that one table into eleven commercial centres across Canada, 100% privately owned and directly managed. From our initial investment, we continue to hold all our properties.

Leadership

Alexandra Kau
President

When Alexandra Kau took the helm of CPD in 2008, she brought with her the rigour, strategic depth, and transactional sophistication of a distinguished career as a Mergers & Acquisitions partner at Torys LLP in New York — one of Canada’s foremost international law firms. Under her leadership, CPD has expanded its commercial footprint, launched a residential development division, and entered the U.S. market — including active investments in New Jersey. Her approach is rooted in trusted partnerships, long-term thinking, and a hands-on entrepreneurial spirit. This is not a company managed at arm’s length. Alexandra is personally invested — in every decision, every development, and every relationship CPD builds.

Our Journey

From One Table to Eleven Centres

1966

Hans Kau Founds Mobilia

Beginning with a single beautifully designed teak table, Hans Kau builds Mobilia into one of Canada’s most respected furniture retail brands — known for quality, value, and timeless design.

1987

CPD Is Born — Brossard, QC

Rather than lease space for Mobilia, Hans Kau creates the concept of owning the entire centre. Capital Property Development builds and opens its first open-air lifestyle centre in Brossard — Galeries Brossard, its founding property.

1990s

Montréal Expansion — 4 Centres

Building on Brossard’s success, CPD expands its open-air model across the Greater Montréal region, establishing a portfolio of four lifestyle centres anchored by proven tenants and national retailers.

2000s

National Expansion — Toronto & Ottawa

CPD’s proven model is brought to Ontario’s most dynamic markets — 5 centres in the Greater Toronto Area and 1 in Ottawa — establishing CPD as a national commercial real estate platform.

2008

Alexandra Kau Takes the Helm

Rather than lease space for Mobilia, Hans Kau creates the concept of owning the entire centre. Capital Property Development builds and opens its first open-air lifestyle centre in Brossard — Galeries Brossard, its founding property.

2021

Residential Division Launched

CPD enters the multi-family residential sector in Montréal, deploying the same hands-on ownership model that defined commercial success — beginning with two completed projects totalling close to 500 units.

Today

11 Centres + 7 Residential Projects + U.S. Expansion

With 11 operating commercial centres, 7 residential projects in the pipeline (Montréal & Toronto), and active investments in New Jersey, CPD is entering its most ambitious chapter — backed by 60 years of family enterprise.
